The Best of China on Route One

Why travel all the way to China when hungry for the taste of great Chinese food? We have the best of China right here on Route One at Peking Duck, 7531 Richmond Highway. Your host and chef d'cuisine Duck Chang, Jr.; his brother, Peter Chang; and lovely wife and hostess, Joyce Chang, proudly serve some of the best Chinese cuisine in the area. Named after the house specialty - Peking Duck (which was rated 'one of the best in town' by The Washingtonian) - this restaurant has gained the reputation of being one of the finest since it opened in 1982.

What makes Peking Duck stand apart from the scores of Chinese restaurants in this area are the friendly service of the staff and the great food skillfully prepared. Individual attention is given each dish to make sure it is special for the customer.

Greeting you as you enter is the lovely hostess, Joyce Chang, wife of owner Duck Chang, Jr., who is the seventh generation of his family to become a chef. Along with brother, Peter, the Chang family takes great pleasure in preparing and serving the finest, freshest oriental food to their customers.

Peking Duck and the Chang family are synonymous names in China, where Duck, Jr.'s ancestors perfected this world famous dish three centuries ago. His father, Duck Chang, Sr., (who still owns and operates Duck Chang's Restaurant, 4427 John Marr Dr., Annandale), began his career as an apprentice to his father at the family restaurant in Peking, as is the custom in Chinese families.

Duck, Jr., is proud to prepare and serve all your favorite Chinese specialties, as well as entice his customers with other creative dishes, many using the fresh seafood so plentiful in this area. He is always bringing new Oriental favorites to please customers. All lunch and dinner menu items are just as carefully prepared for carryout.

When you order food from Peking Duck for serving at home, they give the same individual attention to each order as they do at the restaurant. Since each order is individually prepared, extra spices can be added or deleted to reflect your specific tastes, making each dish special for you.

The extra special dish, of course, at this restaurant is the duck. Proper preparation, cooking and serving of Peking Duck offers an eating experience that is second to none in this area. Carved at tableside, slices of duck are placed on steaming hot Mandarin pancakes (thin, like crepes) with hoisin sauce and slices of scallion. What an elegant and enjoyable treat! It's also available for carryout at any time, so you can easily offer this spectacular culinary treat to dinner guests in your home.

But duck is not the only reason to come to Peking Duck restaurant, where the menu is brimming over with oriental favorites. Duck Chang, Jr., is quite the creative chef, especially with the fresh seafood he purchases daily.

"We adapt the menu each day to accommodate fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, giving our customers different ways to enjoy their favorites along with fresh fish, scallops, shrimp, chicken, beef and more," he notes. When you combine a creative cook with fresh meats, seafood, exotic spices and fresh fruits and vegetables, you will find a wealth of exciting dishes to enjoy - for instance, fresh whole flounder, steamed or fried crispy and served with either Hunan sauce, spicy

Szechuan sauce or Sweet and Sour sauce. "Or try our Shrimp Pepperada, with a special Szechaun sauce - another unique dish we have created that gets rave reviews," says Peter Chang, who assists his brother, Duck, at Peking Duck. "Check with the waiter before you order since some of our best seasonal dishes are not on the menu."

This individual attention given each and every food served at Peking Duck makes dining a pleasure at all times. And nowhere is this attention more noticeable than during the All-You-Can Eat Buffet . . . a truly unique event where food is brought to your table so you don't have to stand in line

First, the waiter will come to the table and ask your choice of soup (Egg Drop, Wonton or Hot and Sour). Then, without your leaving the table, your appetizer, main entree, tea and fresh fruit for dessert are all served in turn for just $6.25 on weekdays, and $6.50 on Sunday (when Lo Mein is also offered).

"One week we will present such choices as Fried Wonton, Squash Tempura, Steamed Dumplings or Shrimp Tempura for an appetizer; and Lemon Chicken, Mongolian style Beef Scallions, Sou-Choy Shrimp, combination Fried Rice for the entrees," explains Duck, Jr.

"The next week, choices for the All-You-Can-Eat Buffet will be different, but just as delicious. We offer only top quality beef, the freshest seafood, plump and well-fed poultry and pork," says Duck. "All are creatively cooked with a variety of spices to offer our customers a varied selection of top-quality foods.

"For instance, try our Sou-Choy Chicken with fresh vegetables, cooked in a tangy ginger and garlic sauce. It is one of our very popular dishes that's both good to eat and a good selection for the health conscious, as well."

Both the lunch and dinner menus at Peking Duck are brimming over with spectacular oriental food, as evidenced when you check either menu. They have full beverage service at Peking Duck, offering their customers a wide selection: from wine, to colas, to mixed drinks with a party flavor. Hot tea, brewed in the oriental style, is a continuing favorite.
The staff is happy to assist you in planning a special menu for your luncheon, Holiday or evening party or catered event. Special facilities are available at Peking Duck, or they will prepare the food for you to serve at home. This is truly a festive way to enhance your dining pleasure - at home or at Peking Duck.
