Oh, The Things They Can Do With Ice Cream
"I was passing by and saw the shop. It reminded me so much of a place I used to go to when I was a kid, I just had to stop."

Yvette Lowry's nostalgia was triggered by MaggieMoo's Ice Cream and Treatery on Frontier Drive in Springfield. Yvette's son Kenny, normally "a vanilla ice cream man" is chasing the last of his cappuccino and gummi bear concoction around a dessert bowl with his spoon. When asked how his culinary walk on the wild side tasted, he smiled and said simply "it was the best."

Springfield MaggieMoo's owners, Theresa and Bob Pease, offer 38 different flavors of freshly made ice cream and a smorgasbord of mix-ins.

That is the equivalent of a five-star seal of approval to MaggieMoo's owner Bob Pease. "We have the best ice cream in town for two reasons: We make it fresh daily in the store, so it isn't made and then shipped somewhere where it thaws and refreezes, and with our 'mix-ins' we can meet any taste."

MaggieMoo's offers 38 different flavors of freshly made ice cream and a smorgasbord of mix-ins that are all kneaded together on a frozen marble mixing table to create individual treats for each customer that are scooped into a freshly made waffle cone or dessert bowl. "Mix-ins are more than just toppings that can crumble away. They're blended in to become part of the treat. This morning a customer wanted strawberries mixed into lemon sorbet, which was a combination I've never done before. It becomes part of the fun to see how many different flavors we can make," Pease added.

Open Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., MaggieMoo's is a particular hit with the five and six year old crowd who can tour the shop and see first hand how the ice cream is made. "Everything in the store is a favorite of someone," Bob says, "and it's not just ice cream." Solid blocks of sherbet, butter pecan, chocolate with mixed nuts and peanut butter fudge behind glass counters make choosing just one treat even more difficult. There is also a menu of smoothies made with fruit, with or without milk, with or without ice cream. There's a large selection of prepared cakes on hand and ready for that impromptu get-together. Selections may include: Oreo ice-cream cake, Reese's Peanut Butter ice cream cake, Turtle cake, and Sundae cake which is topped with chocolate and cherries.

Planning ahead for the holidays and the inevitable office party? MaggieMoo's specialized ice cream cake, with your choice of 38 flavors, ordered before 1 p.m. can be ready the next day. A specialty of MaggieMoo's sure to be a hit at any tail gate party this fall is the "Edible Image" with a picture perfect Washington Redskin logo. "The 'Edible Image' is done with a computer image printed onto cake 'paper' which isn't actually paper at all, but a layer of icing that becomes part of the cake." Bob added that any photograph, business card, diploma or art work can be used as long as the item is focused and well-lighted. Maximum size of the image is 7.5" x 10".

If you're in the mood for something a little less decadent, MaggieMoo's offers "Booster smoothies" made with bee pollen, granola, wheat germ or oat bran mix-ins.

For the gift giver, the Shop boasts a line of merchandise with the svelte Holstein ("the work horse of the milk industry," Bob points out) namesake who "is a cow with moxie and smooth delivery." Earrings, baseball caps "mugs of fudge" (great teacher gift idea) and T-shirts are all on sale, as well as a selection of clever specialty cards that will bring a smile to the saddest face, especially if they're gifted with the "smooch of Maggie's fudge" samplers. MaggieMoo's Ice Cream and Treatery is located across from Springfield Mall at 6575 N. Frontier Dr. Springfield VA 22150 (703) 921-0380.
