The philosophy of Kiddie Country is to nurture all aspects of a child's growth and development; including the physical, social, intellectual, creative and emotional. The primary goal: to develop self esteem -- accomplished through a curriculum that offers opportunities for individual success in all developmental areas -- by providing a loving and caring environment and by offering many opportunities for learning and growth, particularly through play.

Kiddie Country I, located at 6000 Schoolhouse Woods Road in Burke Centre, was created in 1979 to meet the needs for increased child care in the Burke/Springfield area. Partners Edna Anulewicz and Fred Lowery developed Kiddie Country I not only to provide adequate care for area youngsters, but as a means of enriching children's lives through developmental learning as well.

The immediate success of Kiddie Country I, led to the opening of Kiddie Country II at 9601 Old Keene Mill Road in Burke in 1984. The resultant efforts of Lowery and Anulewicz have led to the establishment of a new standard of excellence in the field of child care.

Kiddie Country provides developmentally appropriate school year and summer camp programs for children ages 2-5. A before and after school program is also provided for elementary school children ages 6-11. A full-time summer camp is also provided for these ages. This program is organized into weekly themes packed with fantastic field trips, an adventurous overnight campout, daily swimming, sports, dancing, music, many, many games and special activities and an end-of-the-summer "smash" musical production by the campers for their families.

Kiddie Country II

Designed especially for children, both Kiddie Country I and II have earned architectural awards for excellence. Once inside, you have entered a little people's palace. Bright, cheerful and inviting, Kiddie Country is a delightfully friendly place. Particularly unique features inside include acoustically tempered ceilings for noise reduction, scaled bathroom facilities to promote independence, a mirrored music room to encourage body movement and a loft for a whole new perspective. Outside, in the summer, the swimming pools, located at Kiddie Country II, are used for lessons and free play by children from both schools; outdoor amphitheaters provide a special gathering place; patios adjoining each classroom offer extended learning space for water play or ball bouncing, and paths to the large shaded playground open up the great outdoors.

The staff at Kiddie Country is as impressive as its architecture. They employ a curriculum director, a music director at each location who spends time with the children every day, an art director and a registered nurse. All teachers hold degrees and the kindergarten teachers are fully licensed by the state of Virginia. The kindergarten program emphasizes language arts, math, computer literacy, science, social studies, social development, art, music and physical development.

Children are grouped by age at Kiddie Country, with no mixing. Both the programs and the building are designed to operate under this principle. Two degreed teachers are assigned to each classroom with one or more aides, depending on the class age. This allows teachers the flexibility to work in smaller groups and gives the children more intimate attention. The ratio of children to adults is seven to one.

Kiddie Country seeks to remain sensitive to both the needs of the child and the parent. For parents of children with special needs such as hearing or speech impairments or delays, Kiddie Country works directly with the County and parents to obtain the necessary services for the child on the premises. Kiddie Country will also serve as a base school for children whose needs require that they attend a special County-sponsored facility for a portion of the day.

As another service to parents, Kiddie Country employs a complete kitchen staff. The children's meals are served right in their own classrooms. Home style food is designed to be nutritious, colorful and fun. In addition to the lunch, and morning and afternoon snacks, which are covered by the tuition, parents have the option of participating in a breakfast plan as well.

Kiddie Country is a place where kids live, laugh and learn. Programs include full-time, part-time and before/after school services. Hours are 6:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. for full-time programs and 9:00 a.m.1:00 p.m. for half day nursery school.
