Are you tired of paying dinner prices for lunch? Come on down
to Johnny Mac's Rib Shack carry-out restaurant on Richmond Highway,
1 mile north of Fort Belvoir, to get your moneys worth and satisfy
your taste buds! Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Johnny
Mac's Rib Shack serves delicious home-made food and the best
barbecue this side of North Carolina. You'll want to come back
time and time again.
I talked to the owner Mike Hill who, along with his partner
Claudia McGhee, have made Johnny Mac's Rib Shack a popular food
stop along the Route 1 corridor. "Everything's made fresh
right on the premises," Mike was proud to point out. "Our
ribs are great, and our barbecue's the best. We make it North
Carolina style." I asked Mike what the difference was between
the Memphis barbecue and the North Carolina style. "We make
ours with a vinegar base. That's what gives it that special taste."
I happen to agree with Mike.
I'd noticed the big ice cream cone on the roof of the red
and white frame building and was curious about an ice cream item
on the menu called "concrete". Mike told me it was
a very, very thick shake. "You have to eat it with a spoon."
Johnny Mac's is unique with some of the down-home items featured
on the menu and Mike was quick to mention his homemade soups,
such as a rich and hearty bean soup - a house specialty.
I had a great time just reading the menu with a variety of
selections to suit every taste. There's a spicy pork chop sandwich,
breaded with the perfect combination of spices for $3.50. The
Wings and Fries are always a hit at only $3.50 and the Rib and
Chicken Combo at $6.95 consists of 3 ribs, 1/2 chicken and a
roll. It's worth the drive down to Johnny Mac's Rib Shack just
for that. But you must try the Pork Barbecue sandwich which includes
coleslaw for only $2.95. When you discover just how delicious
the barbecue is, you'll want to buy it by the pound (it's minced,
not sliced) and take it home for the entire family for only $7.95.
My eye caught the Malt Ice Cream Shakes sign and it reminded
me of Happy Days or life in the fifties. The shakes at Johnny
Mac's Rib Shack contain real ice cream, not some synthetic non-dairy
product. "There's 550 square feet of space here," Mike
told me, "...and it's all for food. We've got peach cobbler,
foot long hot dogs (with or without chili and cheese) and everybody's
favorite Royal Banana Split." My mouth was watering by this
time.

Hamburgers have all but lost their identity in today's fast
food environment, with the assembly line approach turning out
identical rounds of ground beef with predictable toppings to
a busy, working public. But here, at this one-of-a-kind carry-out
restaurant, hamburgers are made fresh daily, one at a time with
care, the way they used to be at home. You can have them with
the homemade potato salad with cole slaw or just by themselves.
They're the best!
The steady flow of customers come from all over, many of them
regulars who make a visit to Johnny Mac's Rib Shack a daily routine.
In that particular part of town, military personnel from Ft.
Belvoir with hearty appetites look forward to stopping by.
Families get a good deal at Johnny Mac's and Mike is particularly
proud of the hickory smoked chicken they serve. A family pack
consists of a whole chicken, a pint of beans or greens, a pint
of cole slaw and rolls for $8.95. Or some prefer a slab of ribs
with the same sides for $17.95.
Whether you would prefer a barbecue sub, a Coney Island hot
dog, macaroni and cheese or all three, topped off with real frozen
custard, you'll come away from Johnny Mac's Rib Shack feeling
good and satisfied.
Stop by Johnny Mac's Rib Shack today and carry-out the best
barbecue you'll ever eat. You'll be glad you did!
