deep roots in the Brandywine Valley, where Howard Pyle worked

The Delaware Center for the
Contemporary Arts boasts three main galleries to present curated,
thematic group and solo shows of national and regional work in
all media that explore topical issues in contemporary art and

crafts from nationally-known artists; solo installations of more
experimental work, as well as documentation of community outreach
projects; solos exhibitions of DCCA artist members' work; and
work of the 26 artists who lease studios on-site from the DCCA.
Educational programs include Contemporary Connections, which
integrates contemporary artists and works of art into the public
school core curriculum, the Artist in Residence program, Symposia
and Gallery Talks.

The Delaware History Center
in downtown Wilmington offers something for everyone, from families
with children to adult tour groups, the seasoned traveler to
tourist. Two museums (a refurbished 1940s Woolworth's, and the
18th-century Old Town hall), an historic square perfect for a
picnic lunch or afternoon respite, and a nationally renowned
research facility are conveniently contained within one city
block. The Delaware History Center is easy to find, with its
huge red arch that spans from one side of Market Street to the
next. A favorite stop for young people is Grandma's Attic, a
hands-on-learn-and-play discovery room on the second floor of
the Delaware History Museum.

Visit the first du Pont family
home, Elueutherian Mills, built by E.I. du Pont in 1803. Situated
on the crest of a hill, it affords a commanding view of the Brandywine
River, with a dam which fed water to the original millrace. This
charming Georgian-style residence is furnished with antiques
and memorabilia of the five generations of du Ponts associated
with the home. Adjoining it is the restored French-style garden
created by E.I. Du Pont, an avid botanist. Your tour will include
the first du Pont home and garden in America, the Blacksmith
Hill workers' community, the powder yards, and a nineteenth-century
machine shop. The museum is open March 15 though December.

Houses of Odessa, a charming village of 18th- and 19th-century
houses located 23 miles south of Wilmington, Delaware, on Route
1, exit 136. The historic houses include the Corbit-Sharp House,
a handsome Georgian house built in 1774; the Wilson-Warner House,
a 1769 example of Delaware-Georgian architecture; the Brick Hotel,
now the visitor reception center; and the Collins-Sharp House,
one of Delaware's oldest houses dating back to 1700, which now
houses the museum's center for educational programming.

The Kalmar Nyckel is a reproduction
of a Swedish tall ship that brought the first permanent European
settlers to the banks of the Christina River in 1638. The Kalmar
Nyckel made a total of four documented roundtrip crossings of
the Atlantic-more than any other settlers' ship of the era. The
ship's mission is three-fold: to be a living history museum;
to serve as a sail training vessel; and to serve as Delaware's
Sea-going Ambassador of Good Will.

magnificent setting. The Louis XVI-style chateau, built in 1909-1910,
contains fine examples of antique furniture, oriental rugs, tapestries

of gardens and natural woodlands surrounding the mansion are
one of the finest examples of French-style gardens in America.
Also on this land is the unique and important Alfred I. DuPont

When George Read II built
his 22 room mansion on the Delaware River in 1801, he aimed to
build the "grandest" house in the state. The interior
reflects the height of Federal grandeur, featuring elaborately
carved woodwork relief plasterwork, gilded fanlights, and silvered
door hardware. A 2 1/2 acre formal garden surrounds the house.
Added by the second owner of the house in 1847, it is the oldest
surviving garden in the region. Enjoy the Read house and gardens
as part of a visit to Historic New Castle, with its 17th century
green, cobblestone streets, shops, restaurants, and delightful
vistas along the river front.
