Custom Transmission Service offers both old-fashioned attention to detail and the latest in diagnostic equipment to deal with today's most advanced computer controlled transmissions. A member of the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association, its ASE-certified mechanics are expert in diagnosing, repairing and rebuilding transmissions, both automatic and manual, and clutches -- for cars and trucks, foreign and domestic.

Custom Transmission Service was opened in 1955 by Claude A. Ramsey and is one of the very first transmission repair shops in the area. Ramsey's skills were so specialized, he taught transmission repair at George Washington High School. Over the 47 years it has been in business, Custom Transmission Service's many individual and commercial customers have come to rely on the friendly, reliable service they receive.

Mr. Ramsey recently asked trusted family friend Dave Miller, a life-long Mount Vernon-area resident and a transmission man for 29 years, to take over general management of the shop and the new staff.

Dave Miller, general manager.

Unlike dealers and other shops, Custom Transmission Service deals one-on-one with their clients. When a car is brought in for repair, a technician will determine the problem. Dave will draw up the estimate and call the owner to discuss repair options. Only after the customer has decided what they want done, based upon the options available to them, does the shop start the work. Written estimates are provided. If a problem arises after the work has started, any variance from the estimate will be discussed with the client and confirmation to proceed will be obtained before any work is done. Guaranteed!

Today's transmissions are highly complex and computerized. Many have more than 250 parts requiring technicians to have a knowledge of hydraulics, electronics, math and computers. Custom Transmission Service is a member of the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association (ATRA) and its technicians are skilled and experienced in diagnosing, repairing and rebuilding all types of transmissions. The technicians at Custom Transmission Service attend seminars twice a year to keep current on new transmission technologies.

One of their newest additions is a Wynn's Automatic Transmission Flush and Fill Machine that provides better transmission maintenance service. This machine works with the engine running, using your engine's power, to ensure that all old transmission fluid is removed from your system. It is designed to pump new fluid into your transmission unit, completely replacing the old fluid which is being forced out. The Custom Transmission Flush Service includes removing and cleaning the transmission pan, changing filters and pan gasket, and re-torquing the valve body--the brain of your transmission system. While the technician has the transmission down, they make a visual inspection of your transmission for debris and wear. This inspection tells the story of your transmission and how it will perform for you.

The technicians at Custom Transmission are skilled, experienced and prepared to do the job.

Car owners should have their transmissions checked yearly or every 12,000 miles. Most cars require periodic transmission tune-ups using a factory-recommended transmission fluid. However, if a transmission needs to be repaired or even a major overhaul, the technicians at Custom Transmission Service are prepared to do the job. "They will completely update the system to OEM (factory) standards," says Dave. Custom Transmission Service offers a 12-month, 12,000 mile nationwide warranty on its transmission work with up-graded warranties available.

Custom Transmission Service's ASE-certified mechanics can repair foreign and domestic cars and trucks. They use computer diagnostics to determine if repairs are needed on a transmission. "Our customers trust that we can do a good job on their transmissions, but they also need minor repair services. Because they wanted us to do them, we have added this component to our transmission service while remaining first and foremost a quality transmission maintenance and repair shop." Dave says. This new business approach is a natural outgrowth of the new management style.

Custom Transmission Service offers monthly specials keyed to seasonal service and a 10% discount for seniors and military personnel.

Old fashioned attention to detail and the technological savvy to get repairs done right are just two of the many reasons Custom Transmission Service is the place to go for automotive servicing. Claude Ramsey's slogan is "Where our customers refer their friends." Dave Miller is doing his best to make sure that sentiment continues.
