Did you ever dream of taking a cruise across the deep blue
Aegean Sea to the magical Greek island of Santorini? Jagged volcanic
cliffs jut up to touch the brilliant blue sky amidst white washed
traditional Greek architecture. Even if a trip to the Greek Isles
isn't in your immediate future, there is an inexpensive way to
get a taste of the islands. Stop in for authentic Greek cuisine
at Angie's Family Restaurant in the Twinbrooke Shopping Center
in Fairfax.
A tightly knit Greek community is at work to provide fresh
high quality inexpensive food, warm hospitality, and a pleasant
atmosphere reminiscent of the islands with its white washed interior,
deep blue trim and Greek artwork.
George and Angela Padiotis, natives of Greece, are seasoned
restaurateurs. They re-opened Angie's on January 17, 2002 after
purchasing it from another family who returned to Greece. George
is from Metsovo, which boasts blankets of snow during the winter.
Angela is from Athens, home of the Parthenon. She was on vacation
when they met in the United States many years ago. He was good
friends with her family. The rest is history.
Today, their grown children, Peter and Ted, help manage the
restaurant. Chefs Dennis Gianopoulos, also a partner, and Peter
Kappatos are among the seven member culinary team. Friend and
Greek native Tina Sotiriou, is also a manager. Angela said, "A
lot of our menu items are family recipes handed down from generations."
Appetizers range from dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) to buffalo
wings. Prices start at $3.25. A homemade soup of the day is also
available in a cup or bowl.
Savory salads will tempt any palate. The Greek Salad is a
true treat for the taste buds. Composed of fresh greens, tomatoes,
kalamata olives, pepperoncini, green peppers, feta cheese and
onion, it is topped with a succulent homemade dressing and pita
bread. "The dressing we have for the Greek salad is a secret
recipe with Greek spices," said Angela.
Whether it's a Greek sandwich or a Reuben, something on the
menu is bound to please every palate. There are over two dozen
sandwich/subs to choose from starting at $3.25. The food is so
popular that one customer travels all the way from Fredericksburg,
Virginia to get one of their special gyros.
